Morgan Dollars
1886-O $1 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1886-O is one of the standout condition rarities of the Morgan dollar series. Readily available in grades up to MS63, few coins achieve MS64 status and finer coins are extremely rare. Much of the mintage was reportedly melted under the authority of the 1918 Pittman Act. Among the surviving coins, flat strikes and indifferent luster limit the assigned grades, leaving but a few hundred coins for the legions of high-grade Morgan dollar collectors.
This Choice example is frosty and softly lustrous. The strike is quite a bit above the norm for the issue, with sharp hair definition except for a few above-ear strands. The eagle is sharp top to bottom. A thin band of reddish-tan toning surrounds each side but does not intrude on the frosty silver centers. CAC endorsement is important for the issue and seldom granted, a recognition aided by the lack of any significant abrasions or marks on the present coin. PCGS continues to show just seven numerically finer examples (10/16).
