1894-O $1 MS64+ PCGS. The 1894-O is a better date that caries a slight premium in well-circulated grades and becomes progressively more challenging in AU condition (the average survivor grades AU50). However, a collector should be able to find an acceptable example in lower Mint State grades with a bit of patience and a decent budget. This New Orleans issue is truly scarce at the Choice grade level, and Gems are very rare. The 1894-O is notorious for its poor production quality and usually unimpressive appearance, but this high-end near-Gem is fully swathed in attractive gold, violet, cobalt-blue, and teal toning that occurs in a concentric fashion on the reverse. Strike definition is expectedly soft, and the only singular mark is a horizontal depression under Liberty's eye. There are 13 finer grading events at PCGS (11/16).
