Morgan Dollars
1903-S $1 MS65 PCGS. A well-known Morgan dollar rarity from the early 20th century, the 1903-S is only readily obtainable in well-worn grades around the VG and Fine levels. This fact indicates a significant degree of circulation for this lower mintage (1.2 million pieces) issue. This is not to say that no bags of Uncirculated 1903-S dollars were held by the federal government after striking. Some definitely were, but those that were not melted under the terms of the Pittman Act were largely paid out to the public by the late 1950s. We do not know at what point this impressive Gem entered the numismatic market, but it would be difficult to improve upon. There is a blush of golden iridescence through the central obverse, as well as a partial halo of orange-russet color at the upper reverse denticles, but the balance of both sides is brilliant-white. Softly frosted with modest, yet appreciable cartwheel effects swirling around minimally abraded, nearly distraction-free features.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2003), lot 7743.
