Proof Morgan Dollars
1888 $1 PR66 Cameo NGC. Doubled Date. Bowers (1993) notes: "Breen has seen no more than a half dozen specimens since the discovery coin in the Anderson-Dupont sale in 1954." Later in his Redbook of Morgan Dollars, he states all proofs are from one die pair. Are we to assume then that collectors simply had not examined their proofs for repunching until this feature was widely published, but now that they have it is actually on all proofs? This piece shows the fullness of strike and strong cameo contrast usually seen on this date. Brilliant throughout and a magnificent proof type coin. Census: 12 in 66 Cameo (2 in 66★), 4 finer (10/16).
Ex: Jack Lee Estate Collection / Houston Signature (Heritage, 12/2008), lot 3310.
From The Stichter Collection.
