1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet, Ligatured NE, MS62 NGC. Noe-8.2, W-740, Salmon 7-E, R.4. 72.4 grains. The prominent die break at the base of GL in ENGLAND identifies this important and rare die marriage in its later die states. Although struck on a narrow flan with OM and the monogrammed NE partially off the planchet, the strike is generally well centered. This example is the usual late die state of the Noe-8 die pair, cataloged as Noe-8.2. On this example, the die break affects four beads of the inner circle and is slightly later than the piece plated in Salmon, or any of those offered in the Ford Collection. The die state is about the same as the Hain-Partrick coin that we sold in January 2015. Both sides are fully lustrous with satin surfaces beneath light gold and pale blue toning. Listed on page 47 of the 2017 Guide Book.
