1783 3PENCE Chalmers Threepence MS61 PCGS. Breen-1018, W-1760, R.5. Annapolis silversmith John Chalmers produced a series of small silver coins to stimulate the local economy at a time when most business was conducted on the barter system, or through the use of various foreign coins, especially the unpopular Spanish cut pieces. Produced locally in Maryland, the Chalmers silver pieces were popular and widely accepted. Most examples encountered today are the shillings, with few threepence and sixpence surviving. This lovely Mint State threepence exhibits light gold toning on the devices and rich blue-steel toning in the fields. The strike is a trifle weak at the left obverse and reverse with the balance of design elements boldly defined. An exceptional example that should garner spirited bidding. Listed on page 53 of the 2017 Guide Book.
