1793 1C Wreath, Vine and Bars Edge, S-6, B-7, R.3, AU50 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Loring Collection. The centering is slightly imperfect, although the beaded border on each side is completely visible. The surfaces display an attractive blend of olive-brown and steel patina with a few splashes of deep mahogany. Scattered handling marks on each side are consistent with the grade.
Breen Die State IV. The bulge is prominent through the left obverse field and hair to the jaw, and a crack is evident along the bulge, continuing into the right field from the lower lip. A faint crack described in the next die state is present, but the cataloger now believes that crack is actually a flaw present to some degree on all examples of the Sprung Die variety.
Bill Noyes grades this piece XF40, with the sharpness five points finer, and lists it in a ninth place tie in his Condition Census. Del Bland lists seven XF40 pieces as tied for 10th best in his roster. Six of those seven pieces have not been seen for more than a quarter-century. We agree with the EAC grade of XF40.
