1793 1C Wreath, Lettered Edge, S-11b, B-16b, R.4, AU53 PCGS Secure. CAC. Breen Die State III, with heavy obverse clash marks. Apparently a new example as this piece does not match any of those illustrated in the Noyes photo book, nor any auction catalog plates recorded in his Condition Census. The sharpness is equal to the New Netherlands 56th Sale coin that Noyes calls XF45 sharpness. However, the surfaces are substantially more pleasing. Compared to the several other census-level examples, the surfaces of this piece are clearly Average and possibly Average Plus. Both sides are smooth with dappled olive, tan, and rose. A trivial field nick at 4 o'clock and another on the bust line are the only pedigree markers on this lovely piece. Our EAC grade XF40.
