1808 1C S-278, B-2, R.3, MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Breen Die State V, rim breaks below the date. Robert Scot's Draped Bust design was replaced in 1808 with the John Reich Classic Head motif. The metallic purity of the copper planchets also decreased, causing coins of this type to be struck with varying degrees of quality and subject to excessive impairment in circulation. Pleasing Mint State examples are extremely difficult to locate. This Choice Brown Sheldon-278 representative displays unusually appealing luster that glistens in the satiny fields. Die erosion around the peripheries is consistent with the die state, although the interior motifs remain well-defined. Burgundy-brown toning only partially masks the underlying coppery luster. Our EAC grade MS60. Population: 10 in 64 Brown, 6 finer (11/16).
