Proof Two Cent Pieces
1864 2C Large Motto PR66 Red Cameo PCGS. The Large Motto 1864 proof two cent piece is usually available overall, but coins with cameo contrast are rare. PCGS reports only five Red Cameos, including four in this grade and one lesser coin in PR65, with no Deep Cameos. Do resubmissions exist in these numbers? Our Auction Archives list only two previous appearances of a PCGS-graded Cameo, one a PR65 coin that appeared more than a decade ago and has since been upgraded, the other a PR66 example that sold in our August 2010 ANA Signature sale, lot 3048, for some $43,125.
The present example is not only conditionally rare for the Large Motto 1864 proof issue, it also showcases a degree of strike and preservation quality that is rarely encountered across the entire series. The devices are fully rendered, and the fields display deep reflectivity. The obverse has a pleasing cameo appearance, and the reverse displays borderline Deep Cameo qualities, aided by hints of lavender color on that side. The obverse is fire-orange. This is a carbon-free coin with tremendous eye appeal.
