1863 3CS PR67+ Ultra Cameo NGC. The 1863 proof trime boasts a minuscule mintage of 460 pieces. Business-strike mintage of the silver three cent piece was sharply curtailed that year, due to Civil War hoarding, putting even more pressure on the tiny proof mintage. Experts agree proof examples are rare in grades up to PR65, and very rare in any higher grade.
The fields of this spectacular Superb Gem are deeply mirrored, and all design elements are fully brought up in frosty relief. The profound field-device contrast of this piece is rarely seen on small silver coins. The present coin is the only silver three cent piece of any date to be certified in PR67+ Ultra Cameo, and no examples have been certified in higher numeric grade within the designation by either of the leading grading services (10/16).
