Shield Nickels
1866/1866 5C Rays, Repunched Date, FS-301, MS65 PCGS. 1866 was the first year of the five-cent nickel denomination, and the U.S. Mint produced a great many dies due to a coin shortage and difficulties with the unfamiliar copper-nickel alloy. Cherrypickers' lists nine Repunched Date varieties, and Fletcher contributes several more. FS-301 ranks among the more dramatic varieties. The date is widely repunched northeast, and shows all four digits from the initial date impression. The reverse exhibits a biplanar crack through the C in CENT. This lustrous Gem has light silver-gray toning and exemplary preservation. Combined PCGS Population for FS-301 through FS-305: 3 in 65, 0 finer (11/16).
