Shield Nickels
1873 5C Open 3, Large Over Small Date, FS-1301, MS65 NGC. The date is recut on this rare Guide Book variety, with the secondary impression made by a smaller date punch than the second, primary. The Cherrypickers' reference suggests that the initial impression was mistakenly executed with the date punch intended for a three cent piece or a half dime. NGC has attributed only five Large Over Small Date coins, the presently offered Gem being the sole finest (10/16). The present example is sharply and evenly struck, showing a couple of thin die cracks extending from the obverse at 12 o'clock down along the wreath branches. Frosty luster is largely devoid of abrasions, and each side has a faint champagne hue.
