Shield Nickels
1873 5C Open 3, Large Over Small Date, FS-1301, MS65 PCGS. The attribution numbers in the Cherrypicker's Guide continue to evolve, having changed more than once through the various editions. This extremely rare variety was once known as FS-009, and is identified as FS-106 on the PCGS holder. Today, it is known as FS-1301. Remnants of a small 3 are visible between the 7 and the 3 of the primary date. Fivaz and Stanton write: "This is a very rare variety, always sought by the many Shield nickel specialists." This Select Mint State piece has satin luster that shines through its lovely gold toning. PCGS has certified 12 of these in all grades, and this is the finest they have graded (11/16).
