Jefferson Nickels
1942-D 5C D Over Horizontal D, FS-501, MS65 Full Steps PCGS. Apparently the best Mint employees joined the armed forces during World War II, since a sizable number of blunders occurred in 1942. Besides the 1942/1 and 1942/1-D dimes, we have the present Guide Book variety. The mintmark punch was initially entered rotated 90 degrees clockwise, then entered a second time with the correct alignment. The lower curve of the initial horizontal D is visible west of the primary Denver mintmark. This Gem ranks in the top tier of known examples. It is mostly brilliant with traces of medium olive-gold toning and a crisp strike. Abrasions are limited to a single diagonal line on the dome of Monticello. Population: 6 in 65 Full Steps (1 in 65+ Full Steps), 2 finer (10/16).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2014), lot 4367.
