Proof Seated Half Dimes
1837 H10C No Stars PR65 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. V-1, Large Date (Slant Top 1, Script 8). The Seated Liberty design replaced the Capped Bust motif on half dimes partway through the year in 1837. Stars were added to the obverse in 1838 (except for the 1838-O), making the 1837 No Stars Seated Liberty dime an extremely popular two-year type issue. Walter Breen estimates only 20-plus proof examples of the 1837 No Stars dime were struck. Accordingly, the issue is very rare in all grades today. The present coin is a delightful Gem, with sharply detailed design elements throughout and repunching evident on all numerals in the date. The fields are reflective and the surfaces are well-preserved, with only a few minor hairlines, under shades of bluish-gray and golden-tan toning. Census: 2 in 65, 2 finer (11/16).
