Bust Dimes
1822 10C JR-1, R.4, MS64 Prooflike NGC. Despite the existence of several Mint State examples, the 1822 is a rare date in any grade above VG or so, and most examples tend to stay in collectors' hands for a long, long time. The reported mintage of 100,000 pieces seems drastically overstated. The Zack, Scuderi, and Sherrill reference suggests only a fourth of that number is a more likely mintage, with other deliveries for the year possibly consisting of 1821-dated coins.
Clearly, the most compelling feature of the coin is its prooflike fields. And they are deeply reflective. While this piece should not be confused with the three proofs that are believed known, the glassy fields are reminiscent of a proof. There is a slight presence of mint frost surrounding the devices on each side. The motifs display a sharp strike with considerable luster that gives the piece pronounced field-to-device contrast. Almost brilliant, each side shows just a hint of light golden patina that deepens slightly around the margins. Acquisition of this splendid Prooflike piece will be a coup for any advanced collector and one that may, in hindsight, prove remarkably astute. Census: 1 in 64 Prooflike, 0 finer (11/16).
