Proof Seated Quarters
1880 25C PR68 PCGS. Briggs 2-B. Type One Reverse. When we last saw this coin, it was part of our sale of The Philip Kaufman Collection, Part 3 at the 2003 FUN auction. Then holdered in a PR68 NGC holder, the coin has since crossed to PCGS at the same grade. It remains a simply beautiful proof irrespective of the holder or date. The obverse displays dominant crimson-orange toning with a crescent of sea-green color at the left border. The reverse is brightly toned with vibrant, golden-orange patina that deepens slightly toward the denticles. The fully brought up frosty devices are equally as blemish-free as the glistening, reflective fields. The most significant pedigree marker (and it is anything but distracting) is a small planchet void (as produced) in the reverse field below the I in AMERICA.
Chief Engraver William Barber redesigned the reverse hub of the Seated Quarter in 1875. The Philadelphia Mint, however, did not immediately discard all of the dies sunk from the old reverse hub. At least one of these dies was in use as late as 1880, and it is identifiable by a cut over the left border of the reverse shield. This coin was struck from that die. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only nine coins in PR68, and none finer including some resubmissions, as confirmed by this coin. Population: 4 in 68, 0 finer (11/16).
