Standing Liberty Quarters
1920-S 25C MS65 Full Head PCGS. The 1920-S is one of the hidden condition rarities of the Standing Liberty quarter series. Overall, Full Head coins are scarce, but in Gem and finer grades, the rarity of this issue surpasses that of the two 1919 branch mint issues and the 1920-D. Further study of auction records reveals that, even though a supply of lower-grade Full Head coins keeps prices accessible, the 1920-S appears at auction in Gem and finer Full Head condition with no greater frequency than the legendary 1927-S. We suspect that a number of resubmissions are reflected in the certified population figures for high-grade coins.
This Gem Full Head example shows sharp head, shield, and star detail, as well as a bold date and a well-defined eagle. Frosty, essentially untoned mint luster rolls over unabraded surfaces, delivering exceptional visual appeal. Acquiring a finer example may not even be an option given the extreme rarity of the present coin. Population: 18 in 65 (2 in 65+) Full Head, 8 finer (10/16).
