Early Half Dollars
1807 50C Draped Bust, O-105, T-4, R.1, MS64 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/2. This is the only use of the reverse die, where the F in OF shows a complete lower right serif, and the leaf points between IC. Overton-105 is the most-often seen variety of 1807 Draped Bust half dollars. Struck from a fairly early die stage, die clashing is visible above the date and a faint die crack exists at the top of STATES.
Examples of Overton-105 survive through MS66, although few near-Gem examples -- or finer -- of any Draped Bust variety survive for collectors seeking high-grade Uncirculated examples. This piece is solidly placed in the Tompkins Condition Census (66, 65, 65, 64, 64, 63). It remains a wonderful type coin with beautiful stone-gray interiors that darken to olive and gold patina around the rims. Fully struck with exceptionally strong detail on the reverse. Population (all Draped Bust varieties): 14 in 64, 9 finer (10/16).
