Bust Half Dollars
1813 50C 50 C Over UNI, O-101, R.2, MS64 PCGS. In one of the more unusual and distinctive engraver errors in a series filled with interesting varieties and engraving blunders, the UNI of UNITED was first positioned far too low on the die. The error was not discovered until at least three letters were in place, at which point they were partially effaced and the die work completed with everything in the proper location. Remnants of the initial UNI remain visible in and around the 50 C denomination.
This is a wonderfully toned and lustrous near-Gem coin. A crescent of vibrant blue toning on the lower obverse joins almond-gold toning that deepens near the edge. The reverse is more extensively toned in the same shades and alive with frosty luster. Both sides display multiple die clashing. Tied for the numeric finest of this important Guide Book variety, we find it hard to believe any other examples of the 50 C Over UNI exceed the natural eye appeal and vivid coloration of this sharply impressed coin. Population: 10 in 64 (1 in 64+), 1 finer (11/16).
