Bust Half Dollars
1814/3 50C O-101a, R.2, MS64 PCGS. A substantial mintage of just over 1 million Capped bust half dollars was struck in 1814, using eight obverse and nine reverse dies in combination. This resulted in nine separate die varieties for the date. The coin offered here represents a late die state of the popular O-101 variety, with the remnants of an undertype 3 below the final digit in the date. An extensive network of die cracks is evident on both sides and dramatic clash marks are visible throughout. The design elements are sharply detailed and the well-preserved surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster, under attractive shades of golden-brown and violet toning. Overall eye appeal is terrific. Population (for the variety): 1 in 64 (1 in 64+), 1 finer (11/16).
