Bust Half Dollars
1820 50C Square Base 2, Large Date, No Knob, O-108, R.2, MS65 NGC. While rare varieties exist for almost every date in the Capped Bust half dollar series, only a few individual dates are considered scarce or rare when the entire population of that date is considered. The rarest date, of course, is 1815 and the second most challenging is clearly 1820. Although the O-108 die marriage is considered just R.2, it is a variety rarely seen in Gem condition. For example, the Queller and Byers collections did not contain any example of this die marriage. The Eliasberg specimen was graded MS60. O-108 is also notable as the only doubled die Capped Bust variety. The doubling is strongest on the leaves of the eagle's branch.
No evidence of die cracks, clash marks, or other die defects are seen on either side of this Gem. The obverse and reverse are both richly toned in gray-brown color with peripheral blue-green accents. All of the design motifs on each side are sharp and well-detailed with full borders presenting a nicely balanced appearance. The surfaces beneath the toning have full frosty luster.
