Bust Half Dollars
1826 50C O-106a, R.3, MS66 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. Currently the finest known example of the O-106 die combination in any die stage, this former Eliasberg coin is a late die state with reverse cracks. A gorgeous and pristine Premium Gem, the surfaces are fully lustrous with attractive gold toning across both sides and steel-blue accents at the borders. The strike is suitably sharp and complete throughout the raised devices.
Both the Donald Parsley and Stephen Herrman references rank this coin at the top of the Condition Census for the variety. In its late state of the dies, this example outranks the next finest-known O-106a by a full two points. It seems unlikely that a finer 1826 piece exists for either the O-106 or O-106a die marriage. Census: 14 in 66 (1 in 66), 2 finer (11/16) for all 1826 die varieties.
Ex: The Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1823; The Joseph C. Thomas Collection at Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2009), lot 704.
