Bust Half Dollars
1832 50C Small Letters, O-121, R.3, MS67 NGC. CAC. The 1 in the date shows a distinct tine beneath the top serif, a remnant of recutting on the digit. There is a diagnostic pencil-shaped die defect on the reverse shield between vertical stripes 5 and 6, confirming the O-121 variety. The 2 in the date is broad and flamboyantly curved at the base, while the reverse shows large arrowheads crowded together, each with a sharp point.
This wonderfully original Superb Gem half glows with satin luster across unblemished, problem-free surfaces. Silver luster gleams beneath cerulean-blue and rose-gray toning with golden accents at the margins. The strike is sharp but not full, with some of the star centers flat, as well as minor loss of detail on the eagle's knuckles above the arrow shafts. The present coin is far and away the finest O-121 in any of the Condition Census listings. Formerly housed in an MS66 PCGS holder (and listed that way in both the Parsley and Herrman references), it crossed to a MS67 NGC holder some years ago. The next-finest O-121 is graded MS64. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (11/16).
Ex: The Allan Mandelstamm Collection of U.S. Type Coins (Superior Pre-Long Beach, 2/2006 as MS66 PCGS), lot 759.
