Bust Half Dollars
1834 50C Large Date, Small Letters, O-106, R.1, MS66 NGC. Diagnostics for this transitional die pair include a small 4 under the primary 4 in the date, and a recut upright on the M in AMERICA. The stars lack centers, but the hair curls are crisp and the eagle shows strong detail on the feathers and fletchings. Beautifully toned in blue and violet iridescence. Copious luster shines through the layer of variegated patina, furthering the already impressive eye appeal. The most recent edition of Stephen Herrman's Auction and Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars shows a single MS67 from the Pogue Collection followed by four Premium Gems, placing this piece solidly within the top finest examples known.
