Seated Half Dollars
1865-S 50C Small Wide Broken S, WB-101, Die Pair 1, R.4, MS65 NGC. Small Wide Broken S mintmark. The dies are in a later state with diagnostic cracks through the rock support and stars on the obverse, and the reverse legends. This is the final use of the the Small S mintmark in the Seated half dollar series. The most recent Bill Bugert reference rates the variety R.6 in the late die state, and the issue is very rare in Gem condition regardless of variety or die stage.
The strike is sharply defined on the central devices, but some of the obverse stars are a tad softly impressed. Original, frosty luster provides this virtually unimprovable coin significant eye appeal and enhances the uniform golden-gray toning that covers each side. A single, small reeding mark near Liberty's wrist in the right obverse field is the sole interruption on the frosty-smooth surfaces. Census: 2 in 65, 0 finer (11/16).
