Barber Half Dollars
1892 50C MS67 PCGS. The novelty of Charles Barber's new half dollar design prompted unusually strong preservation of Mint State coins, despite a general lack of enthusiasm for the aesthetics of the Chief Engraver's artistry. Later issues in the series were largely ignored by collectors, making those dates collectively scarce or rare in Gem condition. The 1892 remains as an affordable type coin candidate in high grade -- at east in comparison to the prohibitive prices realized by similarly graded later issues. And although rare and highly desirable as such in MS67, it remains collectors' best hope for acquiring a type coin in that condition.
This frosty, well-struck representative displays warm sun-gold interior toning on the obverse surrounded by lavender and sea-green peripheral color. The reverse shows sea-green, yellow-gold, and lavender-orange patina. Population: 12 in 67 (3 in 67+), 1 finer (11/16).
