Walking Liberty Half Dollars
1918-S 50C MS65+ PCGS. The U.S. economy experienced a wartime boom in 1918, creating intense demand for half dollars, as the largest circulating silver denomination. Accordingly, the San Francisco Mint struck a large mintage of 10.2 million Walking Liberty half dollars that year. Most of that enormous production total was released into circulation at the time of issue, and few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. As a result, the 1918-S is an available issue in circulated grades, but the issue is a prime condition rarity above the MS65 grade level.
As often seen with such high-mintage issues, the 1918-S typically shows a soft strike on the centers. This Plus-graded Gem exhibits a touch of that softness on Liberty's head and the eagle's leg, but the overall strike is much better than average, with clear separation between Liberty's thumb and fingers on the wreath hand. The well-preserved surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster on both sides, under attractive shades of pale gold toning. Population: 33 in 65 (2 in 65+), 3 finer (11/16).
