1950 50C PR66+ Ultra Cameo NGC. For Registry Set collectors, a Plus designation is often extremely significant when it comes to edging out a competitor for the highest rank. The inaugural proof issue in the Franklin half dollar series is one of the rarest issues in the set in high-grade Ultra Cameo. The present piece is well within the Condition Census for the Ultra Cameo category, and it ranks nearly half of a grade point finer than the single best example at PCGS. The two current finest NGC Registry Sets include 1950 proofs in PR65 ★ Ultra Cameo and PR68 Cameo, respectively. From a certain perspective, the present coin is finer than both. Its importance is amplified when one realizes that there are currently 662 proof Franklin half dollar Registry Sets being assembled, all in need of a high-grade 1950 proof.
