1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, B-24, BB-124, R.2, AU58 NGC. Bowers Die State V. The obverse die failed while striking BB-124, the sole use of the die. On this late die state piece, the obverse die is shattered at the lower-right obverse with multiple die cracks. The reverse die was in its second of three uses, but also in bad shape -- it shows extensive lapping and die cracks, as well as die failure that affects the fields stars and clouds, opposite the area where the obverse die failed.
Despite the advanced die state, many of the raised elements are sharp on this near-Mint example. Liberty's hair strands and ribbon ends are crisp. The obverse stars show complete centers. Little actual wear is visible, and the silver-gray surfaces retain areas of pleasing mint luster. The Bowers list of Notable Specimens includes two AU58 coins and two AU55 examples, confirming the condition rarity of the BB-124 at this near-Mint grade level and any finer.
