Gobrecht Dollars
1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Original, Pollock-116, R.3, PR63+ PCGS. CAC. Silver. Reeded Edge. Die Alignment IV (medal turn, the head Liberty is opposite the F in OF). DTS State A, but we do not see evidence of the normally seen light die clashing in the crook of the elbow and / or below the elbow that was caused by die clashing early in striking. This would position this coin as one of the first 1839s, all of which were struck in the final week of 1839. The eagle is also free from the pebbly die rust seen on Restrikes. The fields are shallowly mirrored and Liberty's foot is unusually sharply struck. Normally Name Removed dollars do not show this degree of definition on the foot. Another unusual feature on this coin, and another indicator of its early striking period is the near-readability of Gobrecht's name on the base. Reverse die cracking is seen in the usual places: very faintly at the tops of ITE, MER, and bottom of LAR. Possibly only 20 circulated and 18 or so Uncirculated examples may exist of State A Originals. This piece was examined by John Dannreuther at Central States and his conclusions are:
1. This is the earliest Judd-104 he has examined.
2. There is a die line above the T, but it is very faint. This leads to the conclusion that at least some State A dollars do have this die line. (Previously it was thought to be evident starting on State B coins.)
3. The strike on this piece is the strongest seen to date on a Judd-104.
Both JD and Craig Sholley speculated about this coin perhaps being a Master Coin. Their conclusion is probably not, but that "no" could change to a "yes" if the coin could be connected to Matthew Stickney. This piece presents lovely, even golden toning with subtle underlying iridescence and no obvious defects on either side. Exceptional quality.
