Proof Seated Dollars
1870 $1 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. OC-P2. Doubling on WE and die lines in the shield recesses attribute the variety. The 1870 is one of the most available dates in the Seated dollar series in both circulation-strike and proof formats. However, specimens as fine as this are extremely rare. The NGC Census shows 80% of proofs without Cameo or Ultra Cameo contrast, 18% with Cameo contrast, and just 2% with Ultra Cameo contrast. Moreover, NGC reports three PR65 Ultra Cameo submissions and merely two pieces finer (11/16).
Each side enjoys pronounced field-device contrast, the effect of which is enhanced by the near-complete absence of color. Glints of gold are confined to the peripheries, while the interiors are totally brilliant. A joy to behold in hand.
