Trade Dollars
1877 T$1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. The 1877 Trade dollar had a record mintage of 3 million pieces, but it didn't start out that way. Only 654,000 examples were coined between January and June. Then another 2.5 million were struck in the latter half of the year, breaking all records for a Philadelphia Trade dollar. Today the issue is usually available for type purposes but is rarely seen in Gem condition. This piece shows remarkably strong definition on the upper obverse with almost complete detailing on the head of Liberty. Both sides are covered with medium density gray, blue, and golden-rose toning with strong underlying mint luster. The reverse shows a number of tiny carbon spots, but the only one of note is on the obverse by star 1. Population: 11 in 65 (1 in 65+), 2 finer. CAC: 9 in 65, 1 finer (11/16).
