Proof Trade Dollars
1881 T$1 PR66 PCGS. CAC. The 1881 Trade dollar, a proof-only issue, comes from a mintage of 960 pieces. David Bowers notes in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States that most proofs of this year were poorly struck, especially on Liberty's head and the adjacent upper stars, due to incorrect die setting in the press. Our Premium Gem offering in this lot does not fit this profile as its design elements are sharply impressed, including fullness on all star centrils and even the beads in Liberty's crown. This coin is exceptional in other respects. Both sides are attractively toned in light to medium intensity electric-blue, lavender, and yellow-gold, and neither reveals mentionable blemishes when viewed under a loupe. Population: 9 in 66 (2 in 66+), 3 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 2 finer (11/16).
