Morgan Dollars
1878-CC $1 MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Dies for the Morgan dollar did not arrive at the Carson City Mint until April 1878, explaining a small coinage of 97,000 Trade dollars earlier in the year, despite the Philadelphia Mint having ceased regular production of that issue in 1877. Under the dictates of the Bland-Allison Act, Morgan dollars were coined in large numbers for the remainder of the year, totaling more than 2.2 million pieces. Many were released into circulation, but many thousands were put into storage, later to be dispersed through the Treasury releases of the 1960s and the GSA sales of the 1970s.
This CAC-approved, high-end Premium Gem displays razor-sharp detail and vibrant, frosty mint luster. Other than hints of light golden peripheral toning, the coin is brilliant, showcasing beautifully preserved fields and a clean cheek. PCGS has seen only six Superb Gems finer (11/16).
