1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS64 Prooflike PCGS. CAC. A Top 100 Variety. During a less enlightened numismatic era, collectors shunned the VAM-3 Capped Die variety because the mintmark was partially obscured by numerous small die chips. In 1965, Leroy Van Allen determined that the variety is a Large over Small CC, and the chips about the mintmark were an attempt by the mint worker to obscure evidence of the initial wrong-sized mintmark impression. Interest in the variety increased, and it became a charter member in the Top 100 VAM keys as determined by Dr. Michael S. Fey and Jeff Oxman. The present Choice Prooflike example has peripheral peach patina and brilliant, mirrored fields. Marks are few, and the eye appeal is superior for the designated grade. Population: 31 in 64 (1 in 64+) Prooflike, 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 64, 0 finer (11/16).
