Morgan Dollars
1889-CC $1 MS61 Prooflike NGC. The 1889-CC is one of the sought-after keys to the Morgan dollar series, from a modest mintage of 350,000 pieces. The coins were all struck late in the year and much of the mintage was released into circulation at the time of issue. The Carson City Mint had not struck any coins since 1885 and the American West was a hard-money economy, so there was considerable demand for silver dollar coinage at the time. Accordingly, the coins circulated extensively and suffered high attrition over the years. Few examples were saved by contemporary collectors and the coins held in government storage were paid out in dribs and drabs over the years until the government stockpile was all but exhausted. The 1889-CC was not well-represented in the Treasury Releases of the 1960s. Today, the 1889-CC can be found in circulated grades without too much trouble, but high-quality specimens are elusive and expensive. Curiously, there is a high percentage of Prooflike coins among the high-grade survivors. This piece shows deeply reflective fields with noticeably contrasting, frosted devices. There are numerous small, but individually insignificant abrasions peppered across each side. The coin presents as brilliant, but a closer look reveals light peripheral color.
