Morgan Dollars
1889-O $1 MS66 PCGS. The 1889-O Morgan dollar boasts a prodigious mintage of 11.8 million pieces, but the issue is very rare in grades above MS65. Many coins were released into circulation at the time of issue and the 1889-O is not difficult to locate in circulated grades today. Even lower Mint State examples are available with some frequency, but really high-grade specimens remain elusive. A large number of coins were held in government storage, but these were mostly paid out in later years, with little notice taken by the numismatic community. By the time of the great Treasury releases of the 1960s, only a few bags remained to be distributed.
Few examples can match the technical quality and eye appeal of the present coin. The design elements are well-detailed, with just a touch of the usual softness in areas like the hair above the ear, where some diagonal planchet striations were not completely eradicated in the striking process. The impeccably preserved surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster, with a few highlights of golden-tan toning. Population: 12 in 66, 0 finer (11/16).
