Morgan Dollars
1893-S $1 AU50 PCGS. The year 1893 is a noteworthy one in the history of both Morgan dollar and mintmark collecting. Branch mint production of silver dollars slowed to record lows in 1893, especially at the San Francisco Mint, which struck just 100,000 examples. Augustus G. Heaton also published A Treatise on Coinage of the United States Branch Mints in 1893, introducing contemporary collectors to the significance of collecting mintmarked coins. Thus, this famous branch mint issue coincides with the rise of mintmark collecting among the general public. While the 1893-S may not have immediately caught the attention of collectors at the time, as witnessed by the number of well-worn examples known today, people soon realized the issue's importance and plucked the coins from circulation. This is an attractive example that is brilliant throughout with slight high-point friction. The fields are semiprooflike, adding even more to the coin's appeal.
