Peace Dollars
1927 $1 MS66 PCGS. CAC. The Peace dollar series is a rewarding series to collect for both well-funded and budget-conscious collectors. Every issue therein, including the key 1928, is readily accessible in circulated grades, making a complete date and mintmark set a realistic goal for the enthusiast on a budget. However, many of these issues become significant -- and sometimes exceptional -- condition rarities in the finer Mint State grades, posing also an intriguing challenge for the patient and financially able pursuer. The 1927 is just such a date. Its low mintage of just 848,000 pieces is one of only four in the series below 1 million coins, but examples remain plentiful in grades through MS64, and are only marginally elusive in MS65. At the Premium Gem level, however, conditional rarity triumphs, making the 1927 even more difficult to find in this grade than the key-date 1928.
The presently offered example displays well-defined relief elements, with radiant, satiny luster that illuminates mottled orange-gold toning over much of each side. Close study with a glass finds the underlying surfaces delicately preserved, and the overall eye appeal is excellent. Population: 15 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 4 in 66, 0 finer (11/16).
