Peace Dollars
1928 $1 MS66 PCGS. Not only does the 1928 issue have the lowest mintage of the Peace dollar series, it trails only the three 1927 issues (1927 P,D, and S) and the 1928-S in the number of certified examples in Premium Gem condition or finer as reported by PCGS. Collectors of high-grade Peace dollars need to look no further than the 1927 and 1928 issues to identify the clear condition rarities of the series.
A faint presence of powder-gray toning is visible on this example -- mostly at the margins, where pale olive-gold highlights attest to the coin's original surfaces. This is a remarkably well-struck and unabraded coin, with soft silver luster shining through to provide nice eye appeal. Only a few minor marks visit the surfaces, visible with a glass but mostly unnoticed in-hand. PCGS has graded 17 pieces in MS66 and one MS66+ (11/16).
