Early Proof Sets
1886 $1 Seven-Piece Proof Set, PR65-PR66 ★ NGC. A third proof set from the same consignor and another original, high-grade set with an appearance that is consistent with the 1880 and 1884 sets. Included are:
Type One Cent PR65 ★ Red and Brown. Similar to the cent in the 1884 set above, but here the red is lighter and brighter. Still, each side has a considerable amount of moss-green patina intermixed with the red, making for a highly colorful and attractive coin.
Three Cent Nickel PR66. Again, each side is covered in a pointillist subtlety of rose, sea-green, and lilac toning that is only noticeable when closely examined. Here the color is sufficiently deep that it partially obscures the proof mirrors. Fully struck.
Liberty Nickel PR65. Rose, yellow, and lilac toning is scattered across each side with slightly deeper hues on the reverse. The obverse fields are deeply reflective, but the reverse is slightly subdued in its reflectivity because of the depth of color on that side. The strike is complete throughout. A few specks of carbon are seen in the center of the reverse.
Seated Dime PR66 ★. The obverse and reverse present the viewer with sharply contrasting, but equally attractive color schemes. The center of the obverse is nearly brilliant, then surrounded by deep rose and followed by a wide swath of cobalt-blue. The reverse, however, is uniformly blue. Bright mirrors are apparent on each side as is significant mint frost over the devices.
Seated Quarter PR66. The obverse is toned uniform medium blue and the proof mirrors shine brightly through. The reverse shows a significant area of brilliance in the center that is in turn surrounded by deep rose and cobalt-blue. An attractive, high-grade proof quarter with significant contrast evident even through the toning.
Seated Half PR66+ Cameo. Proofs from the 1880s have always been popular because of the low total mintage for all the years in that decade. Only 886 proofs were struck in 1886, plus an additional 5,000 strikes for circulation. This is a richly toned example that displays brilliant centers that are surrounded by deep rose that quickly turns to deep cobalt-blue at the margins. Deeply mirrored and nicely contrasted on each side.
Morgan Dollar PR65 Cameo. Most of each side is brilliant, but there is a significant ring of russet and deep blue around the margins -- similar to many of the coins in these three proof sets (1880, 1884, and 1886). The mint frost is thick over the devices on each side, allowing the depth of proof mirroring to provide the observed cameo contrast. Fully struck. Exceptional quality.
