Liberty Quarter Eagles
1865 $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Gold coinage at the Philadelphia Mint was negligible during the Civil War, when circulating coinage was widely hoarded. Fractional paper currency dominated commerce. In 1865, the Mother Mint produced only 1,520 quarter eagles, of which most were eventually destroyed by hoarders or lost to attrition. No more than 35 to 40 examples are known today, almost entirely in circulated grades. Here offered is a near-Mint survivor with impressively sharp detail and truly original prooflike fields that exhibit lovely peach-orange and mint-green hues with wisps of lavender throughout. Light chatter in the fields appears to be all that prevents a Mint State designation. Absolutely among the finest 1865 quarter eagles known. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 4 in 58, 1 finer (10/16).
