Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1854-O $3 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Both sides exhibit minor die cracks. Once the New Orleans Mint completed production of 24,000 three dollar gold pieces in 1854, they discontinued coinage of the denomination. Today, type collectors who seek New Orleans coins are limited to this issue, and they must compete with specialists to obtain an attractive example. PCGS has only certified 26 examples at this grade level, and only two finer pieces. Like most survivors, this satiny yellow-gold example is unevenly struck. The upper obverse and lower reverse are weakly impressed. Minor low areas are noted at the lower right obverse, resulting from foreign matter (probably grease) on the die. Population: 26 in 58 (1 in 58+), 2 finer. CAC: 8 in 58, 0 finer (11/16).
