Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1880 $3 MS65 PCGS. Although well-saved by contemporary collectors and usually available today overall, most of the low-mintage late-series three dollar gold issues are conditionally rare at the Gem grade level. Among these condition rarities is the 1880, which boasts an enticingly low mintage of only 1,000 pieces. Survivors are rare in MS65, as the issue is prone to having scuffs on Liberty's cheek and in the fields, even if otherwise well-preserved. Pieces grading finer than MS65 are extremely rare. The present Gem displays frosty yellow-gold luster and cleaner surfaces than usual. The bowknot is weak, as almost always, but the obverse is sharp. Some reflectivity remains in the fields, although prevailing frosty texture suggests that this piece was struck near the end of the production run, when the dies had lost much of their polished surface. Population: 18 in 65, 4 finer (11/16).
