Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1883 $3 MS64 Prooflike NGC. The extremely low mintage of 900 circulation strike 1883 threes means that a number of pieces, like this example, have prooflike surfaces. Just over 10% of NGC certified pieces are designated Prooflike, but none are finer than this piece. This example has every outward appearance of a proof, except the mirrored fields are not as deep as found on true proofs. Both sides exhibit lovely orange-gold surfaces with satin luster on the devices. A bold strike shows weakness only at the ribbon knot on the reverse. Census: 5 in 64 Prooflike, 0 finer (11/16).
