Proof Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1882 $3 PR63 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The mintage was only 1,500 circulation strikes and 76 proofs in 1882, yet the date is moderately available for the decade, which holds many low-mintage issues. Most the of the circulation strikes were deeply prooflike, causing much confusion with actual proofs. Circulation strikes show recutting on the 2 in the date, but none appears on this true proof, a diagnostic sometimes overlooked by early dealers and speculators.
The gleaming surfaces display nice contrast between richly frosted devices and mirror-smooth, reflective fields. The strike is sharp throughout both sides. A few light lines and small marks are grade-consistent, yet of little detriment to the attractive, orange-gold appeal of this nice Cameo proof. Population: 2 in 63 Cameo, 10 finer. CAC: 1 in 63, 6 finer (11/16).
