Early Half Eagles
1799 $5 Small Reverse Stars, BD-7, High R.6, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. A die crack runs through the O in OF to the cloud, stars, and N in UNUM, where it joins with another crack that travels through the wing to the left foot of the M and the rim. Pickup points for the variety include the upright of the E positioned right of the space between two clouds, and the S is far right. BD-7 is very rare with perhaps 14 to 18 surviving representatives, according to Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties (2004). Light yellow and green-gold surfaces emit glints of luster and show good strike definition. The reverse is noticeably stronger than the obverse. Wispy abrasions and minute ticks are inconsequential relative to the importance of this offering. A prize for the die variety specialist and inarguably worthy of a premium bid.
From The Hutchinson Collection.
