Early Half Eagles
1804 $5 Small 8, BD-1, High R.4, AU55 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. BD-1 is the first of seven die pairs for the 1804 half eagle, attributed by the Small or Normal 8, the blunt 1, and the upright of the E positioned over the break between two clouds. An estimated survival rate of 70 to 90 coins makes this one of the more available 1804 half eagle varieties after BD-7 (100 to 150 pieces believed extant). To be sure, BD-1 is very scarce in absolute terms and rarely offered as fine as this Choice AU example with added CAC approval for quality and eye appeal.
Light straw-gold color adorns bright, partly lustrous surfaces. The obverse is well-struck, while the reverse shows localized softness on the left (facing) wing, tailfeathers, and fletchings. Adjustment marks occur over the central portion of that side and near the right wingtip. Careful inspection is required to view any trace of high-point blending. Noticeably clean for the grade.
